Lost Wax Casting
Lost wax casting meets modern technology in our workshop: we start with a sleek 3D-printed wax model, then encase it in heat-resistant material before it’s fired and filled with precious metal. The result? A lasting piece of art.
Lost wax casting, or investment casting, is a process that dates back thousands of years. The process of lost wax casting begins with the creation of a wax model. Until about 20 years ago, waxes were all carved by hand. That art has all but died now with the growth of 3d printers.
When the wax has been cleaned up, it is encased in a rubber like material called investment. Once the investment dries, we place it in a kiln at around 780C for 8 hours. This melts the wax, leaving a cavity of the shape in its place. Molten metal is then poured into the cavity and allowed to cool and solidify. After the metal has cooled, the investment is peeled away, revealing the final cast metal piece.
The raw casting is then polished. Stones then are set, if there are any. Engraving is the last step, however we do most of our “engraving” in the CAD program. We do have a (one of the few remaining) hand engravers local to us for stuff that CAD won’t do. So we are still able to do the crazy designs you see on belt buckles, guns, and stuff like that.
