How Custom Jewelry Is Made
We will first discuss what it is what you want made and who it is for. Metal choice, size, and finish will need to be decided. If you want stones in your pendant, what kind? How many stones do you want and where? Do you want any enamel for color? After the design is hashed out and a price has been agreed upon, a deposit is required. That is typically half of the cost. However, sometimes, payment plans can be worked out that will lower that. Once that has been paid, we will begin designing your custom charm.
When a draft if ready, we will send it to you for review. At the point, you get to make any changes before we grow and cast it. We will complete all change requests for free as long as they are in line with the original project scope. When you are happy with the charm, we will start the next step: the casting.
Lost Wax Casting
Lost wax casting, or investment casting, is a process that dates back thousands of years. The process of lost wax casting begins with the creation of a wax model. Until about 20 years ago, waxes were all carved by hand. That art has all but died now with the growth of 3d printers. While not able to get as much detail as a wax carver, 3D printers are almost as good and far more forgiving. However, it is sad that there are very few remaining wax carvers. As they retire, no one coming up in the business has learned it. Consequently, there will soon be none left, except maybe in Asia. They value the handmade aspect of things more than the west does. They also make very detailed creations that are not possible with a 3D printer.
When the wax has been cleaned up, it is encased in a rubber like material called investment. Once the investment dries, we place it in a kiln at around 780C for 8 hours. This melts the wax, leaving a cavity of the shape in its place. Molten metal is then poured into the cavity and allowed to cool and solidify. After the metal has cooled, the investment is peeled away, revealing the final cast metal piece.
The raw casting is then polished, usually to a high shine. Stones then are set, if there are any. Engraving is the last step, however we do most of our “engraving” in the CAD program. We do have a (one of the few remaining) hand engravers local to us for stuff that CAD won’t do. So we are still able to do the crazy designs you see on belt buckles, guns, and stuff like that. But on a charm!
