Moissanite Custom Pendant

Moissanite Custom Pendant

We make a lot of custom pendant designs.  We used to make a lot of them using CZ’s too.  But since Charles and Colvard’s patent on moissanite ran out, it has replaced CZ.  And this is a good thing.  Moissanite is more durable and has more fire with only a slight additional cost compared to CZ.  CZ has also been known to fade, become cloudy, or lose its sparkle over time.  In general, moissanite is just a better stone for jewelry than CZ.  It also compares exceptionally with diamonds.  But when you factor in price, moissanite easily comes out on top unless you just want diamonds.  In this post, we will discuss the types of custom pendant designs that can be made with moissanite.  We will also compare them with diamonds to see which works better for you.

What Is Moissanite?

Moissanite is a gemstone that sparkles like no other. It’s often mistaken for a diamond due to its brilliance and durability. In fact, a special diamond tester is required to discern between the tow.  This gem is a great alternative to traditional diamonds, offering a similar look at a fraction of the cost. In our opinion, choosing moissanite is not only a smart financial decision but also an eco-friendly one, as it’s created in a lab without the environmental impact of mining.

One of the most fascinating aspects of moissanite is its origin. Originally discovered in a meteor crater, this gem is truly out of this world. Its unique properties make it even more special than a diamond, in my opinion. With a hardness second only to diamonds on the Mohs scale, moissanite is a practical choice for everyday wear, resisting scratches and chips with ease.

History Of Moissanite

Moissanite has a fascinating history. Discovered by Henri Moissan in 1893, this mineral was found in a meteor crater in Arizona. Initially mistaken for diamonds due to its similar appearance.  Since then, moissanite has since gained popularity as a more affordable and ethical alternative to traditional gemstones.  But it was really only until the last 8 years or so that it has become almost as affordable as CZ.

Moissanite has gained recognition for its fire, brilliance, and hardness.  Those traits make it a desirable choice for engagement rings and other jewelry pieces. Its unique history and characteristics set it apart from other gemstones, offering a modern and eco-friendly alternative for those seeking a touch of luxury without compromising on quality.

How Moissanite Is Created

Moissanite, is created in a lab through a process called the high-pressure high-temperature (HPHT) method. This involves combining silicon carbide powder with a metal catalyst like iron or nickel, then subjecting it to extreme heat and pressure. The result? A sparkly gem that rivals diamonds at a fraction of the cost. Plus, it’s eco-friendly since it’s not mined from the earth!

Another method to create Moissanite is through chemical vapor deposition (CVD). In this process, a small seed crystal is placed in a chamber with gases like hydrogen and methane. When heated, the gases break down and carbon atoms are deposited onto the seed crystal, forming a larger Moissanite crystal over time. It’s like growing your own bling in a lab!

Physical Properties of Moissanite

Moissanite is known for its exceptional hardness, ranking 9.25 on the Mohs scale, just below diamonds. Its brilliance and fire rival that of diamonds, making moissanite a stunning choice for a custom pendant. With its durability and sparkle, moissanite is a practical and beautiful option for those seeking an affordable yet elegant gemstone.

Unlike diamonds, moissanite has a higher refractive index, resulting in more colorful flashes of light, known as “fire.” This unique characteristic sets moissanite apart, giving it a distinctive and eye-catching appearance. Additionally, moissanite is more affordable than diamonds.  This makes it an attractive choice for budget-conscious consumers who still desire a luxurious look. Its eco-friendly origins also appeal to those seeking a sustainable and ethical alternative to traditional gemstones.

Moissanite Cost

When it comes to moissanite, you’re in for a treat – not just for its beauty, but also for your wallet. Compared to natural diamonds, moissanite is a budget-friendly alternative that doesn’t compromise on sparkle. You can get a larger, more dazzling stone for a fraction of the cost. It’s like getting the VIP treatment without breaking the bank!

The cost of moissanite can vary depending on the size and quality of the stone. Generally, you can expect to pay significantly less for a custom moissanite pendant compared to a diamond pendant of the same design. This means you can splurge on a stunning piece of jewelry without feeling guilty about the price tag. With moissanite, you can shine bright like a diamond without the hefty price – now that’s what I call a win-win situation!

So, if you’re looking to add some sparkle to your life without emptying your bank account, moissanite is the perfect choice. Whether you’re shopping for an engagement ring, a necklace, or a pair of earrings, moissanite offers a cost-effective option that doesn’t skimp on style.

Cons Of Moissanite

Moissanite, while a popular alternative to diamonds, does have some drawbacks. One of the main cons of moissanite is its lower hardness compared to diamonds, making it more prone to scratching and damage over time. However, moissanite is still harder than a sapphire.  Additionally, moissanite can exhibit a different kind of brilliance compared to diamonds, which may not appeal to everyone seeking a diamond alternative.

Moissanite brilliance differs from diamond due to its higher refractive index, which results in more fire and sparkle. This means that moissanite tends to exhibit more colorful flashes of light compared to diamonds. Additionally, moissanite has a different crystal structure than diamond, leading to a unique pattern of light reflection that sets it apart in terms of brilliance.

Lastly, Moissanite, raises some environmental concerns with some. While moissanite is lab-created and not mined like diamonds, the manufacturing process requires significant energy consumption. This energy usage contributes to carbon emissions and environmental impact. Additionally, the production of moissanite can generate chemical waste that may harm the environment if not properly managed.

Furthermore, the mining of silicon carbide, the main component of moissanite, can have environmental consequences. The extraction process can result in habitat destruction, soil erosion, and water pollution. It is essential for consumers to consider the full lifecycle of moissanite jewelry, from production to disposal, to make informed choices that align with their environmental values.

Moissanite VS Lab Diamond

When considering Moissanite versus Lab Diamonds, it’s essential to understand the key differences between the two. Moissanite, a naturally occurring mineral, is known for its brilliance and fire, often considered a more affordable alternative to diamonds. On the other hand, Lab Diamonds are man-made diamonds created in a controlled environment, sharing the same physical and chemical properties as natural diamonds. Both options offer durability and sparkle, but the choice ultimately depends on personal preferences and budget. While the cost of lab diamonds has dropped to less then $600 a carat wholesale, they are still far more expensive than moissanite.

Moissanite Colors

Moissanite comes in a variety of colors, including colorless, near-colorless, and fancy colors like yellow, green, and blue. Colorless moissanite is the most popular choice as it closely resembles the appearance of a diamond. Near-colorless moissanite has a slight hint of color but still appears very white. Fancy colored moissanite offers a unique and vibrant option for those looking for something different from traditional white stones.

The color of moissanite is determined by trace elements present during its formation. For example, yellow moissanite gets its color from trace amounts of nitrogen, while green moissanite contains traces of nickel. Blue moissanite is created through a process called color enhancement, where the stone is treated to achieve the desired hue. Each color option offers a distinct look and allows individuals to choose a moissanite that best fits their personal style and preferences.
