Our goal is not to place a lab-grown diamond into a standard mounting. The diamond and ring are considered together so the setting complements the stone, fits the wearer, and reflects the design you actually want.

What Is a Lab-Grown Diamond?

A lab-grown diamond is a diamond produced under controlled manufacturing conditions rather than formed naturally within the earth. It is composed primarily of crystallized carbon and has essentially the same chemical composition, crystal structure, hardness, and optical properties as a natural diamond.

Lab-grown diamonds are not imitation diamonds. They should not be confused with moissanite, cubic zirconia, white sapphire, or other materials that may resemble a diamond but have different chemical and physical properties.

The principal difference between natural and lab-grown diamonds is their origin. Natural diamonds developed through geological processes, while lab-grown diamonds are produced through technological processes that reproduce the conditions needed for diamond crystal growth.

HPHT and CVD Diamonds

Most lab-grown diamonds are created by one of two methods: high pressure, high temperature, commonly abbreviated HPHT, or chemical vapor deposition, known as CVD.

The HPHT method uses extremely high pressure and temperature to grow a diamond crystal around a small diamond seed. The process is based on conditions similar to those involved in natural diamond formation.

CVD growth takes place in a chamber containing a carbon-rich gas. Carbon atoms accumulate in layers on a diamond seed until a crystal develops. Some CVD diamonds receive additional treatment after growth to improve or change their color.

Both methods can produce attractive diamonds suitable for engagement rings. The growth method alone does not determine whether the finished diamond will have strong brilliance or an appealing appearance. Cut, proportions, color, clarity, transparency, and the quality of the individual stone still matter.

Lab-Grown Versus Natural Diamonds

Natural and lab-grown diamonds can look extremely similar without specialized testing. Both can display the brilliance, fire, hardness, and durability associated with diamond.

The major differences involve origin, rarity, price, growth characteristics, and the markets in which they are bought and sold. Natural diamonds appeal to customers who value geological origin, limited natural supply, and tradition. Lab-grown diamonds often appeal to customers who prioritize visible size, quality, and initial price.

Neither origin guarantees that a diamond will be beautiful. A poorly cut lab-grown diamond can look dull, and a poorly cut natural diamond can have the same problem. The individual diamond should be evaluated rather than selected solely because it is natural or laboratory-grown.

Natural and lab-grown diamonds may also behave differently in the resale market. A diamond engagement ring should not be purchased with the assumption that its original retail price will be recovered later. Future prices, resale demand, and trade-in policies can change.

Lab-Grown Diamonds Versus Moissanite

Lab-grown diamonds and moissanite are not the same gemstone.

A lab-grown diamond is diamond. Moissanite is silicon carbide and has different optical and physical properties. Both can be durable, bright, and appropriate for engagement rings, but they produce different visual effects.

Moissanite generally displays stronger rainbow-colored fire than diamond. Some customers enjoy that appearance, while others prefer the balance of white brightness, fire, and contrast produced by a diamond.

Lab-grown diamonds generally cost more than moissanite of a similar visible size but less than comparable natural diamonds. The best choice depends on your preferred appearance, budget, origin, and priorities rather than one stone being universally better.

Choosing Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat Weight

The familiar 4Cs—cut, color, clarity, and carat weight—remain useful when comparing many lab-grown diamonds, although the exact terminology depends on the laboratory issuing the report.

Cut has a major influence on brightness and sparkle. A well-cut diamond can appear livelier and more attractive than a larger diamond with weaker proportions. For round brilliant diamonds, cut should generally receive a high priority.

Color describes the amount of visible body color in the diamond. Differences between neighboring grades may be subtle, especially after the diamond is placed in a ring. The metal color, stone shape, size, and viewing conditions can all affect how noticeable warmth appears.

Clarity evaluates internal inclusions and external blemishes. A very high clarity grade does not always produce a visible improvement after the diamond is set. Many customers prefer an eye-clean diamond rather than paying primarily for microscopic rarity.

Carat measures weight rather than visible diameter. Two diamonds with the same carat weight can look different in size because of their shape, depth, and proportions. Compare the actual millimeter measurements along with the carat weight.

Choosing a Diamond Shape

Lab-grown diamonds are available in most popular shapes, including round, oval, cushion, emerald, radiant, pear, marquise, princess, Asscher, and heart.

Round brilliant diamonds offer balanced sparkle and work with nearly every setting style. Oval, pear, and marquise diamonds create an elongated appearance and may provide greater visible coverage across the finger.

Cushion and radiant diamonds combine broader outlines with brilliant-style faceting. Emerald and Asscher diamonds use step-cut facets, creating larger flashes of light and a more geometric appearance.

The diamond shape also affects the setting. Pear and marquise points, princess-cut corners, and other vulnerable areas require appropriate support and protection.

Solitaire Lab-Grown Diamond Rings

A solitaire places one principal diamond at the center of the design. Although the basic arrangement is simple, the ring can still be customized through its prongs, basket, setting height, band width, metal, profile, engraving, and hidden details.

Four-prong settings expose more of the diamond’s outline, while six prongs provide additional points of contact and often give round diamonds a more traditional appearance. Bezel, cathedral, tulip, trellis, and low-profile settings provide other possibilities.

A solitaire may look clean and understated from above while including hidden diamonds, filigree, engraving, or contrasting metal beneath the center stone.

Halo and Hidden-Halo Designs

A halo surrounds the center diamond with smaller stones, increasing the ring’s overall visual coverage and adding another layer of sparkle.

The halo may follow the center diamond’s outline or create a contrasting shape. A round diamond can be placed within a cushion-shaped halo, while an oval or emerald-cut diamond can be surrounded by a geometric, floral, or scalloped border.

A hidden halo places accent diamonds beneath the center stone rather than around its face-up outline. It is most visible from the side and adds detail without significantly changing the apparent size of the diamond from above.

Three-Stone and Multi-Stone Rings

A three-stone engagement ring places one stone on each side of the center diamond. The side stones may match the center shape or create contrast through pears, baguettes, trapezoids, rounds, or other cuts.

Smaller side stones emphasize the center diamond, while larger side stones create a broader arrangement across the finger. Custom design allows the angles, spacing, and proportions to be adjusted rather than relying on a standard three-stone mounting.

Lab-grown diamonds can also be used in two-stone, five-stone, cluster, bypass, and asymmetrical designs.

Bezel, Cathedral, and Pavé Settings

A bezel surrounds all or part of the diamond’s edge with metal. It produces a smooth outline and offers added protection around the girdle. Bezels may be clean and modern, engraved and vintage-inspired, or incorporated into a more elaborate multi-stone design.

A cathedral setting uses arches that rise from the band toward the center diamond. This creates a distinctive side profile and can provide room for hidden stones, engraving, filigree, or decorative metalwork.

Pavé settings place small diamonds across the surface of the band. Pavé may cover most of the shank or remain limited to the shoulders near the center setting. Channel, flush, bezel, and shared-prong settings offer additional ways to incorporate accent diamonds.

Choosing the Metal

Custom lab-grown diamond engagement rings can be made in yellow gold, white gold, rose gold, platinum, or combinations of metals.

Yellow gold creates a warm contrast around a white diamond. White gold and platinum provide a bright neutral background that visually blends with the stone. Rose gold adds softer color and works especially well with floral, vintage-inspired, and romantic designs.

Two-tone construction can combine a white-metal center setting with a yellow- or rose-gold band. This allows the prongs or bezel to remain visually neutral around the diamond while introducing a contrasting color elsewhere in the design.

Price and Budget Considerations

Lab-grown diamonds generally allow customers to choose greater carat weight or higher apparent quality for the same initial budget than comparable natural diamonds. The exact difference changes over time and varies by shape, size, quality, supplier, and market conditions.

Avoid selecting the largest diamond available without considering its proportions and how it will work with the ring. A very large stone can appear unbalanced on a narrow band or require a higher and heavier setting than expected.

Environmental and Ethical Considerations

Lab-grown diamonds do not require natural diamond mining, but that fact alone does not establish the complete environmental impact of every stone.

Energy sources, manufacturing efficiency, location, labor practices, transportation, and documentation vary among producers. Broad claims that every lab-grown diamond is environmentally harmless or automatically more ethical should therefore be treated cautiously.

When origin or production practices are important to you, ask what documentation is available for the particular diamond or supplier rather than relying on a general marketing statement.

How the Custom Design Process Works

The process begins with your ideas, inspiration images, preferred diamond, metal, ring size, setting style, wedding-band preferences, and budget.

After the design direction and price are agreed upon, a deposit is required to begin the CAD model. Detailed renderings show the proposed ring from multiple angles so you can review the proportions, stone placement, band, profile, and other details.

Reasonable changes can be requested before the design is approved. After approval, the ring is manufactured in the selected metal, polished and finished, set with the center and accent diamonds, inspected, and photographed before shipping.

What Determines the Price?

The cost of a custom lab-grown diamond engagement ring depends on the center diamond, accent stones, metal, ring size, finished weight, band dimensions, setting style, and complexity of the design.

A simple solitaire generally costs less to manufacture than a ring with extensive pavé, a halo, several diamond shapes, hand engraving, filigree, two-tone construction, or a custom-fitted wedding band.
