Dr Who TARDIS Necklace

If you aren’t a DR Who fan, The TARDIS stands for Time And Relative Dimension In Space and is a fictional time machine and spacecraft that appears in the wildly popular British science fiction TV show Doctor Who and its numerous spin-offs. Is is this we based our Custom TARDIS Necklace off of.

The TV Show Doctor Who mainly features a single TARDIS owned by the central character called the Doctor. However, in the series, other TARDIS are sometimes seen or used. The Doctor’s TARDIS has a number of features peculiar to it, notably due to its age, construction, and personality. Other TARDIS have the ability to camouflage their appearance to blend into their surroundings, however the chameleon circuit in The Doctor’s TARDIS is broken, meaning that it always resembles a police box.  To Americans, the Custom TARDIS Necklace looks like a telephone booth.

Doctor Who has become so much a part of British popular culture that the shape of the police box has become associated with the TARDIS rather than with its real-world inspiration the original police box. The name TARDIS is a registered trademark of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). The police box design has also been registered as a trademark by the BBC, despite the design having been created by the Metropolitan Police, so we make our Custom TARDIS Necklace under the radar!

What Is A TARDIS?

The TARDIS is dimensionally transcendental, meaning it’s bigger on the inside than the outside. The interior exists in a different, relative dimension to the exterior. In the very first story it was established that the TARDIS usually changes its exterior appearance on each trip to blend in with its surroundings. The Doctor later stated that it was the broken chameleon circuit that caused it to be stuck in the shape of an old style police box.

In the days before mobile phones and the internet, Police Boxes were one of the few ways people could contact the EMS services. They also allowed Police officers to contact each other for faster relaying of information.

There were many different designs and styles, during the 1930’s TARDIS like Police Boxes started appearing all over the UK. One of the big differences was in Glasgow where the Police Boxes were red and not blue.

By the 1970’s most of the Police Boxes had been decommissioned due to the introduction of two way radio. Only a handful of original Police Boxes still exist today.
