There are two major types of engagement ring styles to choose from when choosing an engagement ring. They are arching cathedral design versus what we like to call the Tiffany style.  Both styles have their own unique aspects that make them desirable for certain people’s tastes.  We are pretty sure you know what a Tiffany style setting is, so we will leave that for another post.

This Modern Cathedral Engagement Ring is a new spin on the cathedral engagement ring.  There are 2 rows of diamonds on the opposite sides of the band, which is a little cool.  But then those rows are interrupted by swooping lines of stones that go up the sides of the cathedral. It is a very dramatic effect.  The accents are 1mm in diameter, but they could be made larger.

What Are Cathedral Engagement Ring Settings?

The cathedral setting is one of the most elegant, classic, and consequently, popular engagement ring settings. Similar to the graceful arches of a cathedral, this setting uses arches of metal to hold or frame the diamond or other gemstone.  Cathedral Engagement Ring Settings can be be set with prongs, bezel or tension settings since the determining feature of this ring is not how the center stone is set, but rather how it is elevated with arches above the rest of the ring.  The arches can add extra height and make the center stone appear larger; they can also add cost-saving style for less money than adding additional diamonds.

Our Favorite Cathedral Engagement Rings have typically been in white gold, although there are plenty of yellow and rose gold rings as well. The cathedral setting is most popular with the Round Brilliant Cut, but other shapes can be supported by this design as well.

Why Cathedral Engagement Ring Settings Are Popular

Cathedral engagement ring settings are popular for several reasons. Firstly, they offer a stunning and elegant look that many couples desire for their engagement ring. The raised setting of the cathedral design allows more light to enter the diamond, enhancing its brilliance and sparkle. This makes the ring truly eye-catching and ensures that it stands out on the finger.

Secondly, cathedral settings provide excellent protection for the center stone. The arches on either side of the diamond act as a secure foundation, holding it firmly in place. This reduces the risk of the diamond becoming loose or falling out, giving couples peace of mind that their precious stone is well-protected.

Lastly, cathedral engagement ring settings can be customized to suit individual preferences. Whether you prefer a classic, vintage, or modern style, there are countless variations of the cathedral design to choose from. This allows couples to create a unique and personalized ring that reflects their own taste and style.

In a nutshell, the popularity of cathedral engagement ring settings can be attributed to their stunning appearance, excellent protection for the center stone, and the ability to customize the design. If you’re looking for a ring that combines elegance, security, and personalization, a cathedral setting may be the perfect choice for you.
